Guts & Blackpowder Zombie Types

Know your enemy. Complete breakdown of every zombie variant with combat strategies and priority targeting.

Zombies in Guts & Blackpowder are not a uniform threat — six distinct variants each behave differently, scale differently with waves, and demand different countermeasures. A public lobby that ignores Bomber priorities will lose barricade clusters. A squad that cannot differentiate Zapper chains from Runner grabs will wipe during infection modifiers. This guide covers every zombie type in detail so your team assigns targets correctly on every map and game mode.

All Zombie Types at a Glance

Type Speed Health Special Priority
Shambler Slow Low Grab infection Low
Runner Fast Low Grab + infection High
Bomber Slow Medium Explodes on death Critical
Zapper Slow High Lightning chain High
Cuirassier Medium Very High Armored resistance Medium
Igniter Slow Medium Throws fire, ignites structures High

Shambler — Basic Horde Fodder

The Shambler is the most common undead in Guts & Blackpowder. Slow shuffling movement, low health pool, and a basic grab attack that builds infection over time — individually trivial, genuinely dangerous in packs of eight or more. Public lobbies often lose squads not to special zombies but to Shambler swarms that flank through side corridors while players focus on the obvious Runner.

Kill priority: low when specials are present. However, during the early waves of Endless mode before Runners appear (waves 1–2), Shamblers are the only threat. Musket volleys and Blunderbuss spreads handle clusters efficiently. Sapper Axe swings with headshot multipliers delete them fastest in melee range.

Shamblers pathfind toward players using the navmesh — tight indoor spaces and doorways concentrate them. Open courtyards spread them thin. Use this to your advantage: funnel Shamblers through chokepoints on maps like Leipzig church holds where blunderbuss Seamen can hit five or six at once.

Runner — Grab and Run Threat

Runners sprint directly toward players and initiate a grab animation on contact — this is not a standard attack but a forced infection tick that starts a countdown. Teammates must interrupt the grab with a melee swing within roughly three seconds or the infected player begins converting toward zombie state. Chaplain Blessing and Mercy ability cancel infection immediately.

Runner health remains low — one musket headshot or blunderbuss pellet cluster kills them. The danger is the grab window during chaotic holdouts when one Runner slips past your firing line undetected. They appear starting at wave 3 in Endless mode and are present on most Objective maps from the start.

Kill priority: high. Call "Runner" immediately when you spot one. Infantry and Officer players should pre-aim toward lane edges where Runners commonly flank. Never ignore a Runner in favour of Shambler cleanup — a single missed Runner costs a player respawn and potentially spreads infection to nearby teammates.

Bomber — Barricade Destroyer

The Bomber is the most structurally destructive enemy in the game. Slow-moving like the Shambler but identifiable by its enlarged torso and green-tinged skin, the Bomber does not attack directly — it detonates on death. The explosion has a substantial radius and deals damage to players and destroys all Barricade segments within range. Stakes, barricades, and player clusters all take full damage.

Bomber kill priority: critical. In public lobbies, Bombers should be called out immediately and assigned to ranged players — musket shots from behind Sapper barricades, or pistol finishers from Officers. Never let a Bomber die near your primary defensive line. Kite them to open ground before finishing them, or push them back with Bayonet charges.

The Bomber detonates on death regardless of cause — your shots, a teammate's melee, even environmental hazards all trigger the explosion. This makes them particularly dangerous during Endless wave transitions when players might instinctively rush to finish stragglers near the barricade line. Sapper barricade placement doctrine always accounts for Bomber spacing: never cluster more than ten structures in one group.

Zapper — Armored Lightning Tank

Zappers are the tanky special units introduced around wave 10 in Endless mode. They carry a primitive electrical weapon that fires a chain lightning arc between players standing within approximately twelve studs of each other. The chain deals moderate damage and the visual effect obscures the Zapper itself — players caught in the chain often panic and abandon positioning.

Zapper health scales with wave number using a formula: 60 × (1 + wave ÷ 10) in Standard mode, doubling to 120 × (1 + wave ÷ 10) in Hardcore. By wave 20, a single Zapper can absorb fifteen musket shots. Focus fire Zappers from behind barricades with your best penetration weapon. Officer Charges buff the team during Zapper-heavy waves.

Spread players apart to reduce chain damage — the lightning arcs between grouped teammates. If your Surgeon and Chaplain are standing together during a Zapper volley, the chain can incapacitate both simultaneously. Spread formations, maintain doorframe positions, and call Zapper positions vocally. Heavy Sabre and Lance thrust attacks work well for melee characters who need to close distance.

Cuirassier — Armored Cavalry Zombie

Cuirassiers are the armored zombie variant, identifiable by their reinforced chest plate and slower, heavier gait. They absorb musket rounds and require either penetrating rifle shots, Officer Pistol finishers, or sustained melee focus to bring down. They appear from approximately wave 16 in Endless and during late-stage holdouts on Objective maps like Roscoff and Berezina.

Musket penetration values matter against Cuirassiers. The default Musket with its medium penetration handles them adequately at close range. The Rifle with 15 penetration deletes them efficiently at distance. In melee, Sapper Axe headshots with the 5× multiplier work well. Officers should use Charge buffs to close distance and finish with bayonet or pistol.

Do not let Cuirassiers reach your Surgeons or Musicians. Their high health pool means they absorb hits that should go toward clearing Runner and Bomber threats. Prioritize them with your best DPS once Bombers are cleared, and never stack multiple Cuirassiers into your primary kill zone simultaneously.

Igniter — Fire Hazard and Structure Burner

Igniters throw incendiary projectiles that create persistent fire zones on the ground. These flames deal damage over time to players who walk through them and destroy wooden Barricades and Stakes within seconds. On maps like Vardøhus Fortress and London, Igniter fire during holdout phases is a primary cause of barricade collapse.

The Water Bucket at 50 Francs extinguishes fire on teammates and structures. Every Sapper and at least one support player should carry one on Igniter-heavy maps or past wave 20 in Endless. Fire spreads slightly from the impact point — treat Igniter projectiles like Bomber explosions and maintain spacing from teammates and structures.

Igniters appear from approximately wave 20 in Endless. Kill them at range before they reach throwing distance. Their fire arcs are slow and visible — dodge sideways if a throw is incoming. Structures built from wood (barricades, stakes) are vulnerable; Stakes with fire DoT tick down and collapse. Rebuild immediately after fire zones clear.

Zombie Scaling by Wave

Every Endless map follows consistent zombie scaling rules. The base spawn count formula is 8 + (wave × 3), giving roughly 11 zombies on wave 1 and 68 on wave 20. Special zombie slots add on top of this baseline. By wave 20, a full lobby faces shambler floods plus simultaneous Runner, Bomber, Zapper, Cuirassier, and Igniter pressure.

Wave Specials Added Notes
1–2 Shamblers only Learn positioning, no special threats
3+ Runners mixed in Start calling Runner flanks
6+ Bombers appear Barricade spacing critical
10+ Zappers added Spread formations, high penetration
16+ Cuirassiers possible Heavy DPS focus, Officer Charges
20+ Igniters added Water Buckets mandatory

Infection Mechanics and Grab Survival

Infection is not instantaneous — it builds in ticks from grab attacks by Shamblers, Runners, and certain environmental hazards. When infection reaches 100%, the player converts into a zombie and becomes hostile to their former teammates. Chaplain Blessing removes infection instantly; Chaplain Mercy prevents conversion for a window even after 100%.

The full infection survival guide covers Chaplain mechanics, mercy timing, and how to save grabbed teammates without dying to friendly fire. In summary: always call "grabbed" in voice chat, always interrupt grabs with melee swings, and always prioritize saving Surgeons and Chaplains over DPS players.

Priority Target Order Summary

  1. Bombers — detonation destroys barricades and player clusters
  2. Runners — grab starts infection countdown; disrupt team formations
  3. Igniters — fire zones collapse structures; water bucket demand
  4. Zappers — lightning chain devastates grouped teams; spread apart
  5. Cuirassiers — high HP absorbs DPS; coordinate focus fire
  6. Shamblers — filler threat; clear when specials are handled

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most dangerous zombie in Guts & Blackpowder?

Bomber is the most structurally dangerous — one explosion can delete your entire defensive line. Runners are the most tactically dangerous because they start infection timers on grabbed teammates, forcing immediate saves or lost players.

When do Zappers appear in Endless mode?

Zappers start spawning around wave 10. Their health scales with wave number, making them increasingly difficult to focus down. See the wave scaling table above for full breakpoint details.

How do I counter Igniter fire on my barricades?

Buy Water Buckets (50 Francs) for every player on your team past wave 20 or on maps like Vardøhus Fortress and London where Igniters are prevalent. Water instantly extinguishes structures and teammates.

What weapon penetrates Cuirassier armor?

The Rifle at 500 Francs offers the highest penetration (15 studs) and handles Cuirassiers efficiently at distance. The default Musket with medium penetration also works at close range. See the weapons guide for full penetration values.

How do I save a teammate who got grabbed by a Runner?

Hit the Runner with any melee weapon to interrupt the grab animation. The window is roughly 3 seconds. Call "grabbed" immediately so teammates know to help. Chaplain Blessing removes infection instantly after the save.

Do zombie types differ between Objective maps and Endless mode?

The zombie roster is identical, but scaling differs. Objective maps have fixed scripted spawns tuned to the difficulty of each segment. Endless scales infinitely — the longer you survive, the more zombie variety and density increases.
